Did I enjoy this book? As there are 50 of them so far, you better believe the answer is yes!
J.D. Robb’s In Death series is fabulous. Meet Lt. Eve Dallas, a homicide cop with the New York Police and Security Department in the year 2058. Virtually all of today’s issues don’t exist, replaced instead with issues unique to life in 2058. Prostitution is legalized and an actual licensed profession, mothers can stay home and draw a wage for doing so, cars fly, off-planet travel is as normal as cross-country travel, food is mostly plant-based, and body-sculpting is the norm if you can afford it. The one thing that hasn’t changed? All the ways in which humans can harm and murder one another. And that’s where Eve comes in. She’s a strong, solitary, no-nonsense cop with a dark past of her own. Following her on the path she travels never gets old or boring.
I’ve read this series piecemeal since its release. As it’s the pseudonym of Nora Roberts (my favorite author), I knew I’d love it from the get-go. I wasn’t wrong. As a special project, and to catch up on recent releases I haven’t read yet, I decided to start the series over. I wasn’t disappointed or bored. It was fun to go back, meet them again, be reminded of some characters that have left the series, some old cases, and of course fall in love with Roarke all over again.
Roarke is the perfect man, a man with his own dark past. An Irish street rat, he grew up from nothing to become the richest man in the world. Other than owning all things on and off planet, his passion is showering love, clothes, and thoughtful gifts on the love of his life, who never having had any of that in her life is always flustered at receiving them. The relationship between Eve and Roarke is the stuff of romance and legends and will make even the most cynical person swoon.
The cast of supporting characters help make this series well-rounded and full of life. They’re what make this a long-standing, wonderful series. They’re quirky and unique, you can’t help but accept them into your heart. From Peabody’s FreeAger upbringing, to McNab’s flashy outfits, to Mavis’s outrageous outfits and endearing charm, to Morris’s still waters, to the unknown candy thief who’s been thwarting Eve for as far back in the series as anyone can remember.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely! The 51st book in the series, Shadows in Death, will be released in September 2020.
About the first book, Naked in Death – from Goodreads: Here is the novel that started it all- the first book in J.D. Robb’s number-one New York Times-bestselling In Death series, featuring New York homicide detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke.
It is the year 2058, and technology now completely rules the world. But New York City Detective Eve Dallas knows that the irresistible impulses of the human heart are still ruled by just one thing: passion.
When a senator’s daughter is killed, the secret life of prostitution she’d been leading is revealed. The high-profile case takes Lieutenant Eve Dallas into the rarefied circles of Washington politics and society. Further complicating matters is Eve’s growing attraction to Roarke, who is one of the wealthiest and most influential men on the planet, devilishly handsome… and the leading suspect in the investigation.
