Did I enjoy this book? I really enjoyed this book. I read it every free chance I had, and I didn’t want to stop reading until I finished the last page.
The Midnights is a story that will stay with you. The characters are far from perfect, but they are real. I was heartbroken for Susannah. She seemed so lost, and her mother didn’t seem like she was really there for Susannah, but she was. Her mom had her own issues that she was dealing with, and even though the two of them weren’t quite on the same page all the time, it was a genuine mother-daughter relationship. Mom was there, she cared, she was involved, and she wanted the best for Susannah. They fought, but they loved each other. Susannah’s passion for music was evident from the beginning. I loved the way she could hear music–melodies, harmonies, rhythms, all aspects–everywhere. Her friendships were spot-on. She grew apart from some and close to others. And some friendships were just for a moment.
It’s so hard to write 5-star reviews. All I want to say is “Go read this book. Trust me.” But I know I need more for a review, and I can’t exactly tell you everything that I loved because that would ruin the book for you. All I can say is this: The Midnights is beautifully written. I loved it.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely.
About the book – from Goodreads: Susannah Hayes has never been in the spotlight, but she dreams of following her father, a former rock star, onto the stage. As senior year begins, she’s more interested in composing impressive chord progressions than college essays, certain that if she writes the perfect song, her father might finally look up from the past long enough to see her. But when he dies unexpectedly her dreams—and her reality—shatter.
While Susannah struggles with grief, her mother uproots them to a new city. There, Susannah realizes she can reinvent herself however she wants: a confident singer-songwriter, member of a hip band, embraced by an effortlessly cool best friend. But Susannah is not the only one keeping secrets, and soon, harsh revelations threaten to unravel her life once again.
