Did I enjoy this book? Yes, yes, and YES!

This book starts in the 1960s, where we find Claire and her daughter visiting Scotland. The truth comes out about Brianna’s father, and they, with the help of your Roger Wakefield, embark on a journey through history to find out what happened to our favorite Scottish hero. This book deviates from the first two books in that we get to read chapters from Jamie’s perspective now. First we spend some time with Claire trying to track down where Jamie is. When she finds him, we jump to Jamie’s story at that point in time and find out what’s going on with him. The author flips you back and forth like this for a bit. I found this to be a fantastic way to keep both characters alive in your mind while advancing the plot. Well done!

Claire makes a heartrending decision to leave her daughter in 1968 and go back in time to find Jamie. After all the craziness that you would assume happens when someone returns from the (assumed) dead after 20 years, the plot branches off in a new direction. I liked this because you don’t just stumble around in the past with the “silly Claire is from the future and doesn’t understand old-time stuff.” The author gave the story new life and a new direction. Well done, again!

One of my favorite things about this book is the way the author brings everything to life for you. People, settings, etc are brought to life through Claire’s sense of smell–of all things! This makes everything so realistic.

(Notice a pattern happening here?)

Would I recommend it? So much yes! If you were sad because Claire had to leave Jamie at the end of Book 2, this book gives you every piece of the reunion that you were hoping for. There is so much satisfaction in reading this book. I would pay VERY close attention to all of the characters that are referenced through the entire book. The author does not dally with unimportant figures–each of the people you encounter will be important through the rest of the series . . . so pay attention!

About the book – from Goodreads: From the author of the breathtaking bestsellers Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber, the extraordinary saga continues.

Their passionate encounter happened long ago by whatever measurement Claire Randall took. Two decades before, she had traveled back in time and into the arms of a gallant eighteenth-century Scot named Jamie Fraser. Then she returned to her own century to bear his child, believing him dead in the tragic battle of Culloden. Yet his memory has never lessened its hold on her… and her body still cries out for him in her dreams.

Then Claire discovers that Jamie survived. Torn between returning to him and staying with their daughter in her own era, Claire must choose her destiny. And as time and space come full circle, she must find the courage to face the passion and pain awaiting her…the deadly intrigues raging in a divided Scotland… and the daring voyage into the dark unknown that can reunite or forever doom her timeless love.

It seems like this is the last book I read in the series. I should pick it back up again.
