GIVEAWAY and Author Interview with Krista Holle!!!
A big welcome to Krista Holle, author of The Lure of Shapinsay.
“Childhood is an endless game of playing pretend. This is something we don’t outgrow. Adults pretend through books.” – Krista Holle |
About Krista Holle
Krista has been writing since she was nine-years-old when she scribbled out her first adolescent work entitled Merish, the completely illogical but heartfelt story of a girl who was part mermaid, part fish. As a young mother, Krista added to her repertoire some middle grade readers and picture books she’s wary of mentioning.
After the kids were enrolled in public school in 2009, it occurred to Krista that there is an insatiable audience of women and girls who want to read books filled with stories about true love, not just vampires. Convinced that there was an unfulfilled audience waiting for what she love to write—romance, she sat down in the family’s dungeon, a.k.a. the basement, and began to furiously type. In no time, her first novel was drying on crisp white paper.

I had a few questions for Krista and she graciously answered them for all of you!
1. What made you pick selkies and mid 19th century Scotland for your book? Where did the inspiration come from? I wanted The Lure of Shapinsay to have a fairy tale feel to it, and you can’t do that with “What sup dawg?” and snake skin stilettos. So I cranked back the clock a hundred and fifty years and found a windy island with a castle—Shapinsay. I’ve always loved the haunting tales of the selkies. For the selkie newbie, selkies are beautiful seal men and women who live the bulk of their lives under water as seals, but occasionally shed their skins to come on land as humans. The men are notorious for luring women to their deaths beneath the sea. Paranormal romance is really hot right now, but eventually everyone’s going to get tired of vampires. The paranormal lovers will love selkies too; they’re just much less known.
2. How much research went into writing this book? A lot of research went into the “Lure” because I wanted the story to feel authentic. Among my research, I located some ancient stories told in the local dialect so I could pepper the story with the real thing. I also located some old maps of Shapinsay from the 1800’s to make sure I got my geography right.
3. Is there anything about any of the secondary characters – such as Blair, Magnum, Tipper, or Mr. Lennie – that you would like your readers to know? Blair is Kait’s twin brother. He’s extremely protective over her, but Kait’s as independent as he is and wants none of it. Even after the conclusion of the story, Blair remains an integral part of Kait’s life. They have a very strong bond as twins that neither of them will admit.
4. Is there anything new on the horizon for you? A sequel perhaps? No sequel for The Lure of Shapinsay planned, but I am releasing a new book this summer called The Wind Whisperer. It’s a young adult novel about a young Native American girl with the ability to “hear” the spirits of the wind. While her tribe’s at war with a brother tribe, Anaii falls in love with the enemy. In a nutshell, it’s a yummy love triangle that takes place before the arrival of the first white man. It’s filled with intrigue, kidnappings, murder, and battles. The guys will like this one too.

Ever since I saw a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie set on the coast of Ireland about a female selkie, I have loved stories that include them. I think this one sounds great because it includes two of my favorites historical and fantasy with romance.
Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.
