Did I enjoy this book? I really enjoyed this book! I’ll be the first to admit, thrillers aren’t my favorite genre of books. It’s not that I have a problem with thrillers, but some of them can get really close to crossing the line into horror or just get too graphic for my liking. I have an overactive imagination, and I just can’t handle stuff that is too scary. This is the second book that I’ve read by Lisa Gardner, and she does an amazing job of keeping you on the edge of your seat without ever crossing the line into horror. I was a bit skeptical when I picked up this book, since it’s number 11 in the series and I haven’t read all the previous books. How would I know what’s going on or who all these people are? The author balances perfectly on the line of giving you enough information so you know how everyone is connected, without wasting your time on nothing but backstory. I walked away from this book thinking that I’d enjoy reading the previous books in the series, but I could also pick up the next one she writes without missing any crucial information.
For the book itself, I couldn’t put it down! I love a story told from multiple points of view, and this one did not disappoint. I was engaged, I cared about each of the characters, and I LOVED reading from Bonita’s point of view. This was a well-crafted story with strong characters and a ton of suspense. Exactly what I would want in a thriller!
Would I recommend it? Absolutely! What a fabulous read! Don’t let the series number scare you away. You can absolutely read this as a standalone book. However, this has also left me wanting more, so you can bet I’ll be jumping at the chance to read more books in this series and by this author!
About the book – from Goodreads: Bestselling author Lisa Gardner unites three of her most loved characters -Detective D.D. Warren, Flora Dane, and Kimberly Quincy – in a twisty new thriller, as they investigate a mysterious murder from the past that points to a dangerous and chilling present-day crime.
FBI Special Agent Kimberly Quincy and Sergeant Detective DD Warren have built a task force to follow the digital bread crumbs left behind by deceased serial kidnapper Jacob Ness. And when a disturbing piece of evidence comes to light, they decide to bring in Flora Dane who has personal experience of being imprisoned by Ness.
Their investigations take them to a small town deep in the hills of Georgia where something seems to be deeply wrong.
What at first seems like a Gothic eeriness soon hardens into something much more sinister as they discover that for all the evil Jacob committed while alive, his worst secret is still to be revealed.
Quincy and DD must summon their considerable skills and experience to crack the most disturbing case of their careers – and Flora must face her own past directly in the hope of saving others.
