Did I enjoy this book? Argh! I read the first book in this series (Three Dark Crowns, see my review) quite a while ago. At the time, I didn’t know it was the first in a trilogy, so I thought it was odd how slowly the plot moved. Then the book was amazing for the last 10% of the story and totally redeemed itself and I was really excited for book 2! Unfortunately, I think time away from the first book made me remember it much better than it actually was. One Dark Throne picks up right where Three Dark Crowns leaves off but completely drops all of the excitement. The plot goes right back to the slow, dragging, boring pace. Since there was so much time in between books, I forgot who half the supporting characters were and most of the background stories that apparently matter in this book. This book was pure filler material. It was as if the author set out to write a trilogy but only had enough material for one book, so she’s just DRAGGING everything out unnecessarily.
Would I recommend it? Unfortunately, no. I like the creativity of the story, and this could have been great. But at the end of the day, it just isn’t executed well. I would pass on this whole series; the writing just isn’t that good. That being said, I will absolutely be reading the third book when it comes out. I still have to know what happens!
About the book – from Goodreads: The battle for the Crown has begun, but which of the three sisters will prevail?
With the unforgettable events of the Quickening behind them and the Ascension Year underway, all bets are off. Katharine, once the weak and feeble sister, is stronger than ever before. Arsinoe, after discovering the truth about her powers, must figure out how to make her secret talent work in her favor without anyone finding out. And Mirabella, once thought to be the strongest sister of all and the certain Queen Crowned, faces attacks like never before—ones that put those around her in danger she can’t seem to prevent.
In this enthralling sequel to Kendare Blake’s New York Times bestselling Three Dark Crowns, Fennbirn’s deadliest queens must face the one thing standing in their way of the crown: each other.
