Did I enjoy this book? It has taken four books, but I finally started to appreciate some of these characters! I can’t quite say that I “like” any of them, and the author keeps adding more into the mix. The characters are becoming more three-dimensional, and they are starting to develop a plan to move the plot toward an eventual end. I enjoyed this book for all the scheming. Toward the end of the book, there were certain plot devices that started to get old. Aelin and her crew agree to do something together, Aelin starts to act weird, something shocking happens, and Aelin pulls off a huge victory that surprises her crew, then we find out that Aelin has actually been putting this alternate plan in the works for weeks in secret. The first time this happens, it’s pretty cool. Unfortunately, it happens way too often in this book–it loses its charm.
Would I recommend it? If you have read the first three books, then yes, absolutely, you have to read this book. This plot is satisfying and starts to move the series in the right direction for its eventual end.
About the book – from Goodreads: The queen has returned.
Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past…
She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight.
She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die for her. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.
The fourth volume in the New York Times bestselling series continues Celaena’s epic journey and builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.
