Did I enjoy this book? I picked up this book because I absolutely LOVED the other series by this author (A Court of Thorns and Roses). The internet told me that people who loved that series also loved the Throne of Glass series, so I bit the bullet and read book 1.

The review for this book is hard to write. I couldn’t put down this book, but I didn’t really care for it. I’m sure everyone has one of those books that you WANT to read, so you are GOING to read it, grumbling the entire time. The plot is not awful–a deadly assassin is released from a labor camp to fight in a competition to become the “champion” (aka, head assassin) for the king. Obviously, we know that our assassin is going to win the competition–spoiler alert! The problem with this book is character development. Celaena, our assassin, is a whiny 18-year-old brat, and we never actually see her supposedly incredible skill set. The other members of the court have nearly no personality. There is no one to like in this book. Most of the action scenes are glossed over. The capstone fight at the end of the book is good, but too little too late.

Would I recommend it? As a standalone book, I’m indifferent on my recommendation. Perhaps I just set my standards too high because I loved the other book series so much. In all fairness, this was also the author’s first book EVER. With those two things in mind, I’m going to continue reading the series.

About the book – from Goodreads: In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king’s champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass–and it’s there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena’s fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.
