Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Did I enjoy this book? I did like this book, though it could have been better. This book is described as a story about teenage superheros–that’s exactly what it is.
We are introduced to a world where some people are born with (or develop) superhuman abilities. These people are called prodigies. There is some backstory provided to explain the history of the city and why the current political climate is what it is. I had a hard time reading this section–not because it was boring, but because I had a hard time keeping track of who’s who. Even though these prodigies are broken into Renegades and Villains, it’s not immediately clear that the Villains are the bad guys. After I got past this confusion, I actually looked forward to delving into the “who is REALLY the bad guy” type of plot. This had huge potential, but that’s not where the author went with the story.
Nova (one of the Villains) decides that the best way to beat the Renegades is to become one and learn all their secrets. Once she is a Renegade, she starts to realize that not all of the Renegades are as bad as she built them up to be–much like not all of the Villains are as evil as the Renegades built them up to be.
This book is the first in a series (I think it’s going to be a trilogy?). I wish there had been more closure for the first book. The author could have tied off a lot of loose ends and still left the cliff-hanger to encourage the reader to read the rest of the series.
Would I recommend it? I would recommend it to a teenager. I fear an adult would be frustrated with the missed opportunities in the plot. That being said, I’ll be watching for the next books in the series to come out. I’ll wait for my library to get them; I’m not so eager to read them that I would buy my own copy.
About the book – from Goodreads: From #1 New York Times-bestselling author Marissa Meyer, comes a high-stakes world of adventure, passion, danger, and betrayal.
Secret Identities. Extraordinary Powers. She wants vengeance. He wants justice.
The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies — humans with extraordinary abilities — who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone… except the villains they once overthrew.
Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice — and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

I had some of the same issues. I liked it but I didn’t love it like her other series. Still I am enjoying the conflicted characters.
