Did I enjoy this book: I really did enjoy this read. I was surprised by how invested I got. I didn’t want to put it down. I read it every free chance I had.
Last summer, I read the first installment of the Wendy Darling series, Stars. It was a good read and definitely gave me something to think about. (You can check out my review here.) To be perfectly honest, I was expecting Seas to be a bridge book . . . a book to get us to the end. Boy was I wrong. This book was exciting, thrilling, scary, heartbreaking, lonely, sad, and thought-provoking. It made me look at all the Peter Pan stories I know differently. My beloved Disney Fairies movies (my kids are big fans!) have a different ending now. Disney’s version of Peter Pan is very different to me now. Even Disney Jr.’s Jake and the Never Land Pirates has a different feel for me, especially where Hook and Smee are concerned. (If you haven’t noticed, my kids love Disney . . . TV and movies. I am a fan of the Disney Fairies movies as well. Tinker Bell and the Legend of the Neverbeast is my favorite. But I digress . . .) I even bought J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan to read the “original” tale.
Anyway, back to Seas! It was phenomenal. All the backstory about Neverland, Peter, and Hook really had my mind spinning. The story line with Michael had me in tears. And I do not cry during books. I can probably count on one hand how many times I’ve cried while reading a book. Smee is a favorite. Hook is very different from the version as told by Peter. And Peter . . . well, he is not my favorite by a long shot.
As I said, this book had me turning pages until the end. The end . . . oh, the end . . . left me with an audible gasp and a “Holy . . .” Fabulous. My only question: When will Shadow come out? I can’t wait to see what happens.
Would I recommend it: Yes. Be sure to read the first book, though. You can find Stars (Wendy Darling #1) here.
About the book – from Goodreads: From the author of Queen of Hearts comes the much anticipated sequel to Wendy Darling.
Wendy Darling: Seas finds Wendy and Michael aboard the dreaded Sudden Night, a dangerous behemoth sailed by the infamous Captain Hook and his blood-thirsty crew. In this exotic world of mermaids, spies and pirate-feuds, Wendy finds herself struggling to keep her family above the waves. Hunted by the twisted boy who once stole her heart and struggling to survive in the whimsical Neverland sea, returning home to London now seems like a distant dream – and the betrayals have just begun.
Will Wendy find shelter with Peter’s greatest enemy, or is she a pawn in a much darker game, one that could forever alter not only her family’s future, but also the soul of Neverland itself?
About the author: Colleen Oakes is the author of books for both teens and adults, including the Elly in Bloom Series, the Queen of Hearts Saga (Harper Collins 2016), and the Wendy Darling Saga. When not writing or plotting new books, Oakes can be found swimming, traveling or totally immersing herself in nerdy pop culture. Colleen, like the rest of us, LOVES a good fall read. Let’s be real, there is nothing like sitting in front of the fire place with a glass of hot apple cider reading and an amazing YA book. To help you overcome the inevitable book hangover that you will get after reading Wendy Darling: Vol. 2: Seas, we are giving one lucky winner who posts and tweets about the book during the above time frame a gift card to Barnes & Noble! And as an added bonus, we are throwing in a Wendy Darling inspired Seaglass Yankee Candle. Not only does it match the cover of the book (meaning it is it going to look fly in all of your bookstagrams), but it also goes along perfectly with the seas theme!
