Did I enjoy this book: Yes, I loved this book (partly because it was a Christmas present from my sons)! I immediately identified with this story because Pete’s mom didn’t want to play pirates with him. I totally empathized with her. Sometimes mommy just wants to play “sip some wine and read a grown-up book” . . . I digress. Both my child and I had fun watching Pete be thrust into the position of being the adult while cleaning up after and taking care of Pirate Mom. It was a fun role reversal that we got to talk about. “How do you think Pete feels about cleaning up after Pirate Mom and apologizing for her when she tries to pick a fight with the neighbors?” It turns out my son is Really Glad I’m not a pirate.
I think this story is really about Pete’s mom living out her unspoken desires . . . I mean, I’ve always harbored the inclination to wear an eye patch and stolen underpants as a skull-cap while wielding a frying pan at the PTA, haven’t you?
This book surely provides laughs for all audiences!
Would I recommend it: If you have a younger child who is starting to be interested in early chapter books, I’d say Pirate Mom is a no brainer! Pick it up and enjoy watching as Pirate Mom fulfills her subconscious desire to call her neighbor a bilge rat!
About the book – from Goodreads: Yo ho ho! Pete loves pirates, but his mom thinks they are rude and messy. Then Pete and his mom go to see the Amazing Marco, and Marco hypnotizes Pete’s mom into thinking she’s a pirate! Now Pete’s mom won’t behave. She chases the neighbors. She steals underwear off other people’s clotheslines. She’s even flying the Jolly Roger over the house. Pete has to find the Amazing Marco. He wants his real mom back!
