About the book: Morgan Lane has just completed grad school, and has accepted a job at Baylor Industries with the help of her father, who just so happens to be golf buddies with Drake Baylor Sr., CEO. Morgan has lived her 24 years of life under her parents thumbs, and is more than eager to start living life and carving successful career for herself.
Drake Baylor Jr. is being groomed to take over as CEO of Baylor Industries upon his father’s retirement. Although he was raised in an affluent household, his formative years were rough, leading to a string of bad decisions, and hard lived years. In order to take over as CEO, his father has given him a set of rules to live by for an indefinite period of time: No drugs, limited alcohol consumption, and absolutely no relationships whatsoever with women-his greatest weakness. If Drake can abstain from those three things, work hard, and gain his father’s trust, he can have the keys to the Kingdome.
Drake meets Morgan on her first day at Baylor Industries, and the phrase “love at first sight” doesn’t even come close to describing what is felt between them. Their instant attraction is a magnetic pull that is stronger than either one of them can handle. Now Drake and Morgan are faced with figuring out how to fight for their future together, hoping not to get caught “Breaking the Rules.”
Q: How did Breaking the Rules come to you?
L.K: My husband has just recently switched careers (after 17 years in the same business) but while writing Breaking the Rules, he was the Executive Sous Chef and Banquet Chef at a private yacht club near our house. His title brought lots of responsibility that resulted in him working about 90 hours per week (no joke, he would come home, sleep a few hours, then go back). I had a lot of spare time on my hands between putting our son to bed for the night, and waiting for him to come home. I had actually written the outline for a different story, when Morgan’s character sort of just spoke to me. I quickly wrote out an outline for the story as it came to me, and started writing the book. By the time my husband came home that night, I was about two thousand words in, and I guess I never stopped! I didn’t intend on having Breaking the Rules become a series, but as the character’s story developed, it was clear I would need to write three books.
Q: Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?
L.K: I have an iTunes playlist that is constantly evolving. I like to listen to it to get into the frame of mind needed for whatever character’s POV I’m starting with at that time. Sometimes its sweet and romantic, sometimes its angsty, sometimes it’s sad, or even hopeful. I listened to Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors” a lot when getting into Drake’s character. Perhaps that’s why he’s so lovey dovey and emotional!
Q: What books have most influenced your life?
L.K: I didn’t grow up a reader. I have ADD and a mild form of dyslexia, so it is often hard for me to retain what I have just read, especially growing up if my reading was for school. Because of that, I never really found enjoyment in reading, because it was more of a chore for me. My husband and I moved in together when we were 19, shortly after we started dating (sinners!) and I’d often have him read whatever he was reading at the time aloud, while I would cuddle my head on his chest, to ease my to sleep. After a while he started recommending different books to me that I might enjoy. I read Runaway Jury in about three evenings. My husband explained that if I started reading for pleasure, without the pressure of being tested on the material afterword, I might really enjoy reading and he was absolutely right. Although I can’t really pinpoint a certain book or books that influenced my life, I can say that within the New Adult Genre, I love reading and re-reading books written by Abbi Glines, M. Leighton, Colleen Hoover, and many other authors. I’m a part of the NALitChat on Twitter, that includes many awesome authors in my genre that I also enjoy reading and learning from.
Q: What do you like to do when you are not writing?
L.K: I’m so busy, I usually have to make time to write! I’m a massage therapist and makeup artist by day, mom and wife by night, so I’d say when I’m not doing that, I like to write! I love to read, play outdoors with my family, I’m absolutely addicted to social media (I have various social media sites open on my computer and iPad right now as I write this..I may need a support group!), and I’m very close with my family, and friends, so I’m usually off doing something fun with them as well.
Q: Any future writing news you would like to share?
L.K: Yes! I’m currently writing the follow up to Breaking the Rules, titled Bending the Rules. I am having so much writing this story, and it is constantly evolving as I write it which is very exciting, I’m sure you will all love it! I’m hoping to release the book sometime in early 2014, with the last book in the series hopefully coming out by summer 2014. It’s going to be so hot; it’ll make the perfect beach read!
