About the book: Sophomore Emili Jones has had it with being a boring, straight-A student. Itching for excitement, she sees plenty of it in classmate Farah Menin’s life of frequent dates and edgy adventure. Hoping the popularity will rub off, Emili latches onto Farah and manipulates herself into best friend status. The connection helps her land the hot new guy, Lance Jankins, but there’s a catch. Now a pawn in Farah’s dating games, Emili is on a crash course to betrayal. Will she realize it in time to save herself?
Every Free Chance Book Reviews is pleased to welcome Brenda Maxfield, author of The Lance Temptation, to the blog today. She has prepared the following guest post for all of you.
Greetings all! I’m so delighted to be here. How fun to be able to share some of my writing thoughts with you.
Are you the kind of person who likes to sit in the mall and people watch? Did you see the girl over there standing by the water fountain? Yes, the one with the purple hair? Her boyfriend just dumped her like a brick. I thought she’d burst into tears, but instead her face turned to cement. I watched her. She didn’t say one word, nor did one muscle in her face even twitch.
Her boyfriend’s words climbed the anxiety scale as she continued to stare at him. Then, in a startling turn-around, he began telling her how sorry he was for dumping her.
Still, she didn’t move. He was in her face, sputtering, tears in his eyes, begging her to forgive him.
Finally, he ran off as if escaping a bomb threat. Her eyes, seemingly independent of her face, swiveled and tracked his exit.
Weird.
Okay Brenda, what really happened?
In truth, I saw a girl with purple hair get a drink at the fountain. That’s it. But her looks so intrigued me, I had to give her a story.
Writers have the most fun. Who else but us can come up with a full-blown narrative after observing some tiny innocuous scene?
My best advice to budding writers is to observe, observe, observe. Then play around with your thoughts and see where they take you. Ask bunches of “what if” questions. Find other writers who will help you along the way. (They’re precious.) Ask for and secure good critique partners.
The best advice of all? Put your rear end in the chair, put your hands on the keyboard, and write.
And enjoy the journey!
Hopefully, one day we’ll see each other on the Bestseller List!
