Why did I pick this book: I participated in the blog tour hosted by I Am a Reader Not a Writer. (I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)
Did I enjoy this book: I did enjoy this book. It was a good, clean story and a quick read that kept me interested.
V is for Virgin is well-written. I felt like I was there in the story…not just reading it. I was nodding my head in agreement. I was appalled at the right moments. I was giddy with the sweet moments. I was happily surprised at the unlikely moments. V is for Virgin has it all. There is some really witty dialogue and exchanges. Some of Val’s comebacks to the “Virgin Val” nickname and other innuendo were laugh out loud funny. Furthermore, this story has a wonderful message – it is okay to wait to have sex. And that message is conveyed in a great way, not a beat-you-over-the-head-until-you-agree-with-me kind of way.
All of the characters are real and anyone can relate to them. Val is a sweet girl who has strong moral convictions and control over her life’s choices. I think she is a great role model for teens. She doesn’t give in to pressure from her boyfriend or her peers. She sticks to her guns and ends up making a difference in the lives of many other young adults. While her success with the “V is for Virgin” campaign and jewelry line is rather unlikely, you have to root for her and be proud of Val for her accomplishments.
The other characters were wonderful and added to the whole of the book. Kyle…bad boy, lead singer in a rock band…was a great counter for Val. The chemistry between them jumped off the page. You could feel the tension and heat between them. Isaac was an unexpected character. He is Mr. Popular and the head of the A-list crowd. He is the great boyfriend…there for Val supporting her along the way. And so sweet to her throughout the whole book. Zach kind of got a bad rap in this story…maybe more than he truly deserved. But, hey, that’s high school.
Would I recommend it: I would recommend this book…especially to high school students, boys and girls.
Will I read it again: I can see picking this book up again at some point in the future.
About the book – from Goodreads: When Val Jensen gets dumped for her decision to stay a virgin until marriage, the nasty breakup goes viral on YouTube, making her the latest internet sensation.
After days of ridicule from her peers, Val starts a school-wide campaign to rally support for her cause. She meant to make a statement, but she never dreamed the entire nation would get caught up in the controversy.
As if becoming nationally recognized as “Virgin Val” isn’t enough, Val’s already hectic life starts to spin wildly out of control when bad boy Kyle Hamilton, lead singer for the hit rock band Tralse, decides to take her abstinence as a personal challenge.
How can a girl stay true to herself when this year’s Sexiest Man Alive is doing everything in his power to win her over?
About the author: Kelly Oram wrote her first novel at age fifteen–a fan fiction about her favorite music group, The Backstreet Boys, for which family and friends still tease her. She’s obsessed with reading, talks way too much, and loves to eat frosting by the spoonful. She lives outside of Phoenix, Arizona with her husband and four children.
