The New Kid

The eyes of the pack were wide and fixed on their prey; their bodies leaned forward slightly in a demonstration of power, breathing in rhythm. The stomach of the victim grumbles with fear, provoking a pitiless look from the group. The scanning process begins. Every inch of the prey is analyzed with precision.  The prey takes a step back, but the eyes follow without blinking. The victim can’t meet the stares for too long and looks down, conceding victory to the pack.

That’s how I would describe my first day as a new student or even my first day at work.
Growing up I moved a few more times than usual with my family, due to my dad’s work, and ended up attending several different schools.  I’m very familiar with the feeling of being the new kid.

I remember when I moved for a year from Rio de Janeiro to the northern Brazil, to a city named Salvador, when I was a teenager. For starters, our accents were completely different, and I couldn’t even utter a word without attracting strong laughs. Their slang and vocabulary were very different from mine and even our tastes in music were totally opposed. As I was always good at sports, I tried to gather what was left of my pride during PE class. After scoring multiple goals in a soccer game and giving perfect passes to other players, I thought that I had finally taught them a lesson. I couldn’t be more wrong, though. A puddle of water got in my way and the next thing I knew my butt hit the floor and I was sliding across the whole court. The joke was on me for a couple weeks.
Changes are especially hard to deal with in your teenage years. Any lifestyle alternation brings insecurity and unease, as you leave your comfort zone to enter unknown territory.
But what if your current lifestyle already sucks? What if you already feel like an “alien” in your own city and school? What if a radical change to start from scratch is the only way to erase your failures in life and finally fit in?

That’s the opportunity that will be presented to fifteen year old Albert, whose fears and shyness have up to now made him the lonely prey.

The Chosen of Gaia is a light-hearted novel about taking chances, having the courage to leave it all behind, and to finding your true self in the meantime.
