About the book – from Goodreads: Fat-free cheese is okay–unless you’ve tasted real cheese. Juliet Easton learns this about love too as she uncovers who truly loves her, and who is using her to get to the secret she knows about the disappearance of her sister’s fiance and the pharmaceutical conspiracy he plans to reveal. Can she protect her loved ones’ lives and her heart? You’ll be hooked from Asiago to Zamorano cheese in this suspenseful and hilarious romantic thriller.

About the author: Crissy Sharp is an author, runner, and sports lover. She has a special knack for avoiding cooking and cleaning so she can focus on her true love: writing. She is in awe of people who can do a one-legged king pigeon without pulling something and detests everything about fat-free cheese. Though she’ll always be a Montana girl at heart, she also loves Tennessee, where she currently lives with her husband and three children.

Spotlight: Skipping Midnight by Laura Kenyon (giveaway)

dea3-skipping-midnight-coverSkipping Midnight (Desperately Ever After #3)
written by Laura Kenyon
published by Laura Kenyon, 2016

find it here: (affiliate links) Amazon, Goodreads

About the book – from Goodreads: One part Sex and the City. Two parts Desperate Housewives. Three parts Brothers Grimm.

For the women of Marestam, “happily ever after” has always come with a grain of salt. Be it infidelity or aging, deferred dreams or lost love, or even the pressures of raising a family, they have always seen each other through life’s trials with laughter, wine, and a brand new take on old-fashioned chivalry. But when rage and treachery take over, everything they hold dear comes under attack.

Suddenly, the monarchies are crumbling, Cinderella is missing, Belle is harboring the secret of all secrets, Rapunzel is facing the one dilemma she spent her whole life trying to avoid, and Dawn could lose everything she’s finally learned to love. In order to save everyone and unmask the wolf in their midst, this iconic group of friends must follow a dogmatic fairy no one trusts, invoke a magic no one understands, and face a past they thought they had buried long ago.

Rapunzel, Belle, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and the rest of Marestam’s favorite females return in this third and final novel in Laura Kenyon’s Desperately Ever After series, which takes a whimsical look at our most beloved fairy tale princesses several years after true love’s kiss.

At heart, it’s a tale of ordinary women coming to terms with how their lives have turned out. They just happen to live in castles.

Melissa’s Review: When in French by Lauren Collins

When in French  When in French: Love in a Second Language
written by Lauren Collins
published by Penguin Press, 2016

find it here: (affiliate links) Barnes & Noble, Amazon, iBooksBook Depository, Goodreads

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Did I enjoy this book:
It’s one of those books that makes me wish I had a photographic memory. I’d be that woman at the party who casually tosses funny, quirky book quotes into the conversation, causing everyone to be secretly annoyed at my cleverness. Luckily, I have a terrible memory (and I go to very few parties), so I settled for filling up my phone memory with pictures of Collins’s thoughts.

Anyway. You should read this book. It’s funny and lovely and true.

GOLDEN LINE

“We don’t call an arm an arm because it’s an arm; it’s an arm because we call it one.”

4 stars

Would I recommend it: Absolutely.

Melissa

About the book – from Goodreads: A language barrier is no match for love. Lauren Collins discovered this firsthand when, in her early thirties, she moved to London and fell for a Frenchman named Olivier—a surprising turn of events for someone who didn’t have a passport until she was in college. But what does it mean to love someone in a second language? Collins wonders, as her relationship with Olivier continues to grow entirely in English. Are there things she doesn’t understand about Olivier, having never spoken to him in his native tongue? Does “I love you” even mean the same thing as “Je t’aime”? When the couple, newly married, relocates to Francophone Geneva, Collins—fearful of one day becoming “a Borat of a mother” who doesn’t understand her own kids—decides to answer her questions for herself by learning French.

When in French is a laugh-out-loud funny and surprising memoir about the lengths we go to for love, as well as an exploration across culture and history into how we learn languages—and what they say about who we are. Collins grapples with the complexities of the French language, enduring excruciating role-playing games with her classmates at a Swiss language school and accidentally telling her mother-in-law that she’s given birth to a coffee machine. In learning French, Collins must wrestle with the very nature of French identity and society—which, it turns out, is a far cry from life back home in North Carolina. Plumbing the mysterious depths of humanity’s many forms of language, Collins describes with great style and wicked humor the frustrations, embarrassments, surprises, and, finally, joys of learning—and living in—French.

Gina’s Review: Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty

Truly Madly Guilty

Truly Madly Guilty
written by Liane Moriarty
published by Flatiron Books, 2016

find it here: (affiliate links) Barnes & Noble, AmazoniBooks, Target, WalmartBook Depository, Goodreads

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Did I enjoy this book:
This book started SLOW, but once it picked up, I liked it a lot. It wasn’t as good as Big Little Lies, but this one had characters that kept me curious. They had interesting lives and even the secondary characters intrigued me. I sat many nights with a glass of wine and read chapter after chapter.

The book touches on everything: PTSD, parenting, hoarding, and even infertility. I never thought those topics could blend as well as they did, but they all made sense. This book is full of emotion. It’s not all happy. It’s not all sad, but it’s raw and real. I’m finding that a lot of Moriarty’s books have a way of making me think and feel. This book will stay with me for a while.

GOLDEN LINE

“It was interesting that fury and fear could look so much the same.”

4 stars

Would I recommend it: Yes, definitely.

Gina

About the book – from Goodreads: Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One small dog. It’s just a normal weekend. What could possibly go wrong?

Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit, busy life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job, and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there’s anything they can count on, it’s each other.

Clementine and Erika are each other’s oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don’t hesitate. Having Tiffany and Vid’s larger than life personalities there will be a welcome respite.

Two months later, it won’t stop raining, and Clementine and Sam can’t stop asking themselves the question: What if we hadn’t gone?

In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty takes on the foundations of our lives: marriage, sex, parenthood, and friendship. She shows how guilt can expose the fault lines in the most seemingly strong relationships, how what we don’t say can be more powerful than what we do, and how sometimes it is the most innocent of moments that can do the greatest harm.

Melissa’s Review: Kalifus Rising by Alane Adams

Kalifus Rising (Legends of Orkney, #2)

Kalifus Rising (Legends of Orkney #2)
written by Alane Adams
published by Sparkpress, 2016

find it here: (affiliate links) Barnes & Noble, Amazon, iBooks, Target, WalmartBook Depository, Goodreads

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Did I enjoy this book:
Wheee! It’s nearly as good as the first one! I was secretly hoping Sam wouldn’t be the only Earthling to get cool magical skills, and if you take a close look at the cover art, you’ll see my hopes weren’t for naught. Sam’s friends split up to help save the day this time, and though I liked following their different paths, it felt a bit rushed this time (and a bit predictable, too, if I’m being honest). I struggled with Howie’s dialogue–I think Adams overdid the slang a bit–but hopefully she’ll continue to work on it in the next book (when does the next book come out? Can I read it yet please?).

3.5 stars

Would I recommend it: Yep!

Melissa

About the book – from Goodreads: Sam Baron just freed Orkney from the ravages of the Red Sun—but now, imprisoned by Catriona, leader of the Volgrim Witches, Sam finds the darker side of his half-god, half-witch heritage released, and he fears he might destroy what he saved. Unable to resist the witches’ enchantments, Sam has become their most potent weapon, and is leading an army of monstrous men against Skara Brae.

Sam’s only hope for salvation lies with his three best friends and a mystical artifact known as the Moon Pearl. Keely travels north in search of the pearl, while Howie prepares for the gathering onslaught. Leo seeks a powerful artifact in the underworld, and faces an ancient evil that could be an even greater threat than Catriona and her cronies.

As Sam’s friends rush to save him, other forces are at work in Orkney’s shadows—forces that could help free Sam, or condemn him to the darkness forever.
