Faith in Every Footstep
written by Wesley Banks
publication December, 2016

About the book: On the eve of one of mankind’s toughest races, accompanied by thirteen of America’s rarest dog breed, rookie musher Kyle Walker only has one thought in mind: win. Discovered in the lowlands of South Carolina, the Carolina grays have traveled over five thousand miles to face off in the 2003 Yukon Quest. But one dog stands above the rest—King.

When an unexpected storm strikes, Kyle Walker and the reigning champion are forced to turn back. Stranded at the checkpoint, Kyle and his dogs find solace in a young veterinarian with auburn hair and keen green eyes—Jenna Maynor.

In this storm another race is forming, one of an Inuit man racing to save his family. Presented with the choice to help, but at the risk of his and his dogs’ lives, Kyle Walker ventures into the unknown in search of a mom and two young daughters.

The Yukon Quest was founded on the premise that a dog driver and his team should be a self-sufficient unit capable of challenging varied terrain and severe weather. But these conditions may prove to be too much, even for Kyle and King.

Melissa’s Review: Wintergreen by Mari Biella

Wintergreen

Wintergreen
written by Mari Biella
published by Mari Biella, 2015

find it here: (affiliate links) Amazon,  Goodreads

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Did I enjoy this book:
It’s . . . decent. The storyline is predictable at its best and downright repetitive at its worst. There are only so many times I can read about Wintergreen’s haunted past before I start to feel that Biella simply forgot she already mentioned it. The book lacks depth–both in its characterization and its prose, and I enjoyed it the way a TV junkie enjoys informercials: it’s better than watching nothing.

GOLDEN LINE

“You don’t appreciate how much the ability to control your life means until you’ve lost it.”

3 stars

Would I recommend it: It’s a sitcom of a book, so if you’re in the mood for something extremely light, go for it.

Melissa

About the book – from Goodreads: The past never dies…

When journalist Cat Armistead visits the small village of Wintergreen over Christmas, she thinks that staying in the peaceful English countryside will give her a chance to relax. Her illusions are shattered, however, when a local businessman, Hugo Montbray, is found dead in a wooded area near the village.

As Cat delves into the mystery she finds that Montbray was a man with many enemies, and that his death might not have been accidental. Her search for the truth uncovers local and family rivalry, broken trust, and even a touch of the supernatural. And, as if that weren’t enough, Cat reluctantly finds herself being drawn to Jake Fernsby, the detective who is investigating Montbray’s death.

However, Cat’s interest in the case has not gone unnoticed – and, in investigating it, she might have put herself in grave danger.

A cozy crime mystery set around Christmastime, Wintergreen is the perfect read for long winter evenings.

EFC Promotions Blog Tour Wrap-Up: Watcher and Firebird by Orren Merton

coverWatcher and Firebird
written by Orren Merton
published by Darkling Books, 2016

find it here: (affiliate links) Barnes & Noble, Amazon, iBooksGoodreads, GooglePlay

About the book – from Goodreads: Firebird Alex didn’t know much about the Nephilim until they assassinated her friend in the United States government, kidnapped the man she considers her uncle, and tried to murder her—twice. Now she’s learned that they, and their leader “the Watcher,” will stop at nothing to kill her, everyone she loves, and every Seduman on Earth.

Alex must stop their murderous plans even if it means compromising the heroine she’s become.

OrrenReillySpring2015About the author: Orren Merton started writing fantasy and science fiction at an embarrassingly young age. In high school, he picked up guitar and start playing up and down California in a few bands, culminating in his industrial rock band Ember After.  During that time, magazines, developers, and corporations began to pay him to write and edit music software related articles, manuals, and  books. Since then he has written the urban fantasy novel The Deviant and the science fiction novel Skye Entity before working on The Sedumen Chronicles, his current series of urban fantasy YA novels. He lives in Southern California with his family, pets, collection of sci-fi/fantasy memorabilia, and curiously large stuffed animal collection.

Jaclyn’s Review: Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

threedarkcrowns-tagline-coverThree Dark Crowns
written by Kendare Blake
published by HarperTeen 2016

find it here: (affiliate links) Barnes & Noble, Amazon, iBooks, Target, WalMartBook Depository, Goodreads

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Did I enjoy this book:
This one is definitely for fantasy buffs. If you are OK with jumping into a story about a matriarchal kingdom (queendom?) where people have supernatural powers like controlling animals, controlling the elements, and eating poison without consequence–this book is for you!

I thought this book was well written. I liked the characters that I was supposed to like, and I hated the characters I was supposed to hate. The characters from “the island” don’t really use contractions when speaking, which makes their speech sound halting and formal. I thought this was a great way to convey “otherness” and it contrasted with the speech from the “mainlanders.” My only complaint throughout the book was that I thought the plot moved too slowly. I’d routinely check my progress and think “there is no way she can wrap up this plot with *this* much of the book left!” Turns out–I was right! Three Dark Crowns is the first book of a series; which I didn’t realize until the end of the book. With this knowledge, the author did a great job with character development–giving you enough background to get you through the first book, while leaving room for more in the subsequent books. The ending was EXACTLY what I wanted the ending to be–not predictable, not neat. I immediately started searching for a release date for the next book.

4 stars

Would I recommend it: Yes, I would recommend this book. I think this book would be good for teenagers (some threatened/implied violence, but nothing too crazy) through adults. The main characters are supposed to be 16, and I feel like that would be a good age for a reader–though I certainly enjoyed it as an adult! I’m looking forward to the rest of the series!

jaclyn

About the book – from Goodreads: Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest.
