In the Kitchen: Home Chef: Sirloin Steak with Cherry Bordelaise

Hi, Everyone!

In an effort to spend less time meal planning and more time reading, I decided to give Home Chef a try. It costs less than taking the whole family to a restaurant, and it seemed like a fun way to add some new recipes to my repertoire.

Tonight: Sirloin Steak with Cherry Bordelaise, Chard and Asiago-Cauliflower Gratin

We don’t eat a lot of steak. We spent a few years as vegetarians, and ever since then we’ve been reluctant to go back to red meat, but this recipe looked too tasty to pass up!

616 calories for a steak dinner? Yes, please!

And, while it might not be the healthiest thing we could’ve nommed, you really can’t beat a steak dinner under 650 calories.

Will there be enough veg?

Yes! There was more veg than Husband and I could eat. Hooray! Well actually, I’ll be honest: Husband despises wilted greens. He’ll eat them raw all day long, but heat those leaves just a tiny bit and he’s out. I, on the other hand, am a HUGE fan, but it was still a lot of chard for just one little me.

PRO TIP: “Bordelaise” is code for “gooey, buttery, sweet, not-at-all-healthy sauce.”  It’s DELICIOUS! And listen, don’t worry about the cherries. I’m not a fan of sweets, and this sauce was not at all overly sweet.

Our favorite part: The cauliflower gratin. Will. Make. Again. 20160330_200138

If I make it again: I likely won’t be repeating this recipe–we just don’t eat steak all that often. But you can be absolutely certain the cauliflower gratin will be showing up on my regularly scheduled menu. YUM!

Did my kids eat it: Nah. Husband worked late, so the kidlets were in bed before I even started cooking.
