Why did I pick this book: I read the first three books in the Courtlight series. (See my reviews here: Sworn to Raise, Sworn to Transfer, and Sworn to Conflict.) I participated up for the blog tour hosted by Girls Heart Books Tour. (I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)
Where I stopped reading: Location 439 of 1616 on the e-Book app of my iPhone.
Why I stopped reading: I’ve been wishy-washy about this series from the beginning, but after a few hundred e-pages of Book Four I realized that despite three books full of magic, war, death, torture, mythical beings, and even a little love, Ciardis hasn’t evolved. At all. Not even a little bit. She’s still the same flippant teenager she was in Book One, and that bums me out. I was hoping for some serious character development in Book Three and it wasn’t there. Book Four just felt like more of the same, and I don’t want to waste anyone’s time (my own included) writing the same review over again.
What others have rated this book: According to Goodreads, the average rating for Sworn to Secrecy is 4.62. It looks like a majority of readers gave this book 5 stars. There were 9 5-star reviews on Amazon. At Barnes & Noble, the majority of the reviews were 4 stars. Just because I didn’t finish this book doesn’t mean you won’t.
About the book: In the heart of the Imperial Courts, Ciardis Weathervane knows that death is coming for the empire. With her friends by her side and the new triad of Weathervanes, she’s in a race against time to convince the courts of the same.
She must do her best to unite kith, mages, nobles and merchants under one cause – the fight to prevent a war. Soon she is forced to keep a secret that could exonerate her mother of the Empress’s death, and is always one move away from stepping into diplomatic chaos.

What??? Four books and no character development? What happened in those books then? Stories will get dull if the character do not evolve. It’s through the characters’ growths and changes that we connect with the them even more. So sad this series ended up being a disappointment :/

I know, I know. I’m sad. I kept waiting and waiting for some sort of growth, but even after being tortured in the last book Ciardis didn’t seem to mature. …Maybe it’s just me?… I loved the storyline – enough to keep reading through three books – but, to be trite, the more things changed the more they stayed the same…
