I flopped on a couch. It was stuffy below deck, but Rodrigo’s nose was already pink, and if I took him home with third-degree burns I’d be toast. He glanced up from his water.
‘What’s this?’
‘That? It’s Hal’s storm bottle.’
Rodrigo gawked at the glass thing that dangled above the table, and I could see him thinking, A bottle of storms?
‘For predicting the weather,’ I said. ‘It’s also called a shark oil barometer.’
The bottle was actually one from my collection, a mint-condition Hamilton torpedo with an egg-point base. I took it from its twine cradle.
‘This clear liquid inside is oil,’ I explained. ‘From a shark’s liver.’
I noticed how he tensed at the word shark.
‘And this thick white layer at the bottom is the silt. When the weather’s fine, like today, the two separate out, see? So the oil at the top is clear. But if rain or bad weather is on the way, then the oil clouds over.’
Author the author: Nick Green is a UK children’s and YA author, best known for his trilogy The Cat Kin, published in the UK by Strident Publishing and in Germany by Ravensburger, and also as a BBC audiobook. He has appeared on BBC radio talking about his books, and has been shortlisted for two UK children’s book awards. He regularly does school visits and other children’s literary events. The Storm Bottle is his first straight-to-Kindle novel.
