Why did I pick this book: I had participated in the blog tour hosted by I Am a Reader, Not a Writer(I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)

Did I enjoy this book: This book was okay. The premise was good and sounded so promising. Unfortunately, Rise of the Fire Tamer did not meet my expectations. It just seemed underdeveloped and very predictable.

For a game that, in order to win, the player must use “magic words,” the words were not used or talked about all that often. I was expecting a lot more usage of these words. Shouldn’t the players have used these special words more than they did? It just didn’t make much sense to me. Words, and their definitions, should have been the focus of this book.

Also, there really weren’t any characters that were all that sympathetic or worthy of rooting for. The characters were forgettable. In fact, writing this review, I cannot remember these characters all that well. I could not get behind any of them. A few times, I wanted to like Kat but she failed to deliver. Gemma seemed too pretentious. I wish we would have learned more about these characters…their backgrounds, feelings, hopes, etc. What did their parents think about all of this? Where were the parents? Who the winner was going to be was obvious from the beginning of the game.

Furthermore, there were way too many typos and punctuation mistakes for me. A simple spell-check would have caught quite a few of the mistakes. It was distracting and took away from some of the pleasure of reading this book.

Would I recommend it: I don’t think that I would recommend this book.

Will I read it again: I will not.

About the book: After winning a contest for a popular game called Wordwick Games, five teens Gemma, Sparks, Rio, Kat, and Jack, are invited to stay at Wordwick Games inventor Henry Word’s mysterious castle and play the newest level of Workwick Games. Little do they know, the castle is the doorway to a wondrous world call Anachronia where words can be used as weapons, power, and commodity. There is unrest in Anachronia, and if the five teens can follow the rules of Wordwick Games and prove to be the best player, one of them will be crowned Ruler of Anachronia.

Blog Tour: Nissa by Bethany Lopez (review, giveaway)

written by Bethany Lopez
published by Bethany Lopez

find it here: Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Smashwords, Goodreads

Why did I pick this book: I participated in the blog tour hosted by Xpresso Book Tours(I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)

Did I enjoy this book:
I did enjoy this book. It was a sweet read that left me smiling.

Nissa is indeed a contemporary fairy tale. It is sweet, romantic, and has the reader hoping for a happily ever after at the end.

Nissa was a nice girl for a 900 year old fairy. She wanted to be a fairy godmother to take after her mother. She trained hard and was looking forward to her first solo assignment. As with any newbie, Nissa wanted a challenging, difficult first assignment and found herself rather disappointed in *only* having to help a high school senior who was being picked on relentlessly. However, the Fates seem to know better as to why she received this particular assignment.

Along with Nissa, the rest of the characters were so likeable. Vicky was a great girl who just needed someone to give her that push to stand up for herself. She wasn’t treated well at school but her strength to let it go and to eventually do something about it was admirable. Levi, Vicky’s older brother, is a chivalrous young man who cares deeply about his little sister and the environment. I even liked Jackson, Vicky’s old friend from grade school.

Would I recommend it: I would recommend this book to any YA, fairytale fan. This book would also be suitable for younger YA readers as well.

Will I read it again: I will not.

About the book:
At 900 years old, Nissa is finally ready to follow her mother’s path and become the best Fairy Godmother she can. She’s not thrilled when her first assignment turns out to be a teenage human girl with self-esteem issues, but she knows she has to start somewhere. Her  assignment has dealt with bullies since her freshman year and they haven’t let up. If Nissa can’t help her regain her self-confidence her  future is bleak.

To complicate matters Nissa experiences all the signs that she’s met the being fated for her. This impossibility distracts her from her purpose. After all, fairies and humans aren’t meant for each other. How can her heart believe otherwise? Can Nissa successfully complete her first assignment as a Fairy Godmother? Will the fates allow Nissa and Levi to be together? And even if they do, will Levi believe Nissa once she reveals the truth?

About the book: Samantha Rousseau is used to getting her hands dirty. Working toward a master’s degree in wildlife biology while helping take care of her sick father, she has no time for celebrity gossip, designer clothes, or lazy vacations. So when a duchess from the small country of Lilaria invites her to dinner, Samantha assumes it’s to discuss a donation for the program. The truth will change the course of her life in ways she never dreamed.

Alex D’Lynsal is trying to keep his name clean. As crown prince of Lilaria, he’s had his share of scandalous headlines, but the latest pictures have sent him packing to America and forced him to swear off women—especially women in the public eye. That is, until he meets Samantha Rousseau. She’s stubborn, feisty, and incredibly sexy. Not to mention heiress to an estate in his country, which makes her everyone’s front-page news.

While Sam tries to navigate the new world of politics and wealth, she will also have to dodge her growing feelings for Alex. Giving in to them means more than just falling in love; it would mean accepting the weight of an entire country on her shoulders.

Review: The Karmic Connection by Libby Mercer (review)

The Karmic Connection ArtworkThe Karmic Connection
written by Libby Mercer
published by Libby Mercer

find it here: Barnes & NobleAmazon, Goodreads

Why did I pick this book:  I was asked by the author to review her book. I have enjoyed Libby Mercer’s other books – Unmasking Maya (see my review here) and Fashioning a Romance (see my review here). Therefore, I happily accepted her request. (I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)

Did I enjoy this book: I really did enjoy this book. It was a fun read that I read every free chance I had.

The Karmic Connection is a great story with a great message…no one is ever as they seem. Or as the old saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover. (I love this cover, by the way. The saying is directed towards the characters and Adam especially.) We all have something we are dealing with, you just don’t know what that might be until you truly get to know the other person.

The cast of characters in this book is quite diverse and unexpected. And although we only get glimpses into the lives of the other Luna Wellness Center inhabitants, we feel for them and hope that everything works out for them. I enjoyed every character in this book. I can’t say there was one that I could have had deleted and wouldn’t have cared.

Adam was your typical career/power-driven man wanting to get stay ahead of the game and be successful. He seems to think there is always time for romance later in his life. Now is the time to work. He is more concerned with his business than his own health and social life. He also judges other people quickly, based on first impressions. I love that he learns that everyone has a story and aren’t what they seem at the “wellness center” that he was forced to go to. I also love his internal dialogue when he starts with the new-age talk. That made me chuckle. His story was unexpected…I shouldn’t have judged quickly because there was so much more to Adam.

Lorraine was an interesting character. I expected her to be an organic, vegan, super hippie, new-age character. Talk about judging a person based on first impressions. I figured that she also had a story. I didn’t imagine her story. I was impressed by Lorraine and I really liked her. She was someone I would want to be connected to in some way.

All-in-all, this was a great read. Some unexpected story lines, a sweet romance, an ending that I hope is continued in another book (not needed, but I hope!).

Would I recommend it: I would recommend this book to any chick lit or light fiction/romance lover.

Will I read it again: I just may. It was a fun read.

About the book – from Goodreads: What is the universe up to?

Guilty of nothing more than working too much – or so they say – Adam Stowe is dumped at a “wellness center” in the middle of nowhere by a couple of concerned colleagues. When he meets Lorraine, the beautiful and bewitching yoga instructor, his spirits start to lift, but once he discovers what a flighty fruitcake she is, they drop back down to subterranean levels.

For Lorraine Jameson, Luna Wellness Center was a beacon of solace when her life was falling apart, and she can’t stand the way Adam’s toxic energy is poisoning the peace. He embodies everything negative about the life she discarded eighteen months ago. Despite being fiercely attracted to the arrogant man, she’s determined not to let Adam Stowe anywhere near her heart.

Adam and Lorraine couldn’t be more unsuitable as a potential couple… so why is the universe so dead set on uniting these two?

The Karmic Connection is a different kind of love story with a cast of quirky characters and a mystical, magical New Age-y flavor.

Blog Tour: Reckless Abandon by Jenn Flynn-Shon (review)

Why did I pick this book: I participated in the blog tour hosted by CLP Blog Tours(I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)

Did I enjoy this book:
I did enjoy this book. It was a quick read that had me guessing throughout. I read Reckless Abandon every free chance I had.

Shaw McLeary lives out a crime drama in this fast-paced, suspense novella. Shaw was an interesting character – sometimes she didn’t seem very aware of what was going on around her, while at other times, she was quick on the uptake. I liked Shaw. I wanted it all to work out for her in the best possible way. I didn’t want to believe the possible worst-case scenarios.

JJ was amazingly helpful to his ex. I was surprised at the lengths he went to help Shaw find her missing husband. He seems like a loyal person. I enjoyed his bluntness with his theories. He is also hiding something. It was fun to watch these two slide easily back into their old habits and comfortableness with each other.

There were plenty of moments where I thought I had this story figured out. And most of the time I was wrong. It was fun to come up with the different theories. I won’t share my theories with you but I was right on one of them.

I could say so much more about this book but I won’t because I don’t want to spoil it for any of you. Get the book. Read it.

Would I recommend it: I would recommend this book, especially if you enjoy fast-paced, suspense reads.

Will I read it again: I will not, but I am so hoping there will be a sequel!

About the book – from Goodreads:
How far would you go for love? Young Adult fiction Author, Shaw McLeary, returns from Whole Foods to discover her husband, Danny, is gone. So is their stash of cash, his clothes, passport, and her wedding rings. He took off in a hurry and left her behind. While trying to piece it all together Shaw witnesses a cop’s murder in her home. Determined not to become the next victim, she flees. She fears dirty cops are involved in Danny’s disappearance. There’s only one person she can trust to help her – JJ Anderson, Private Investigator. Also, her ex-fiancé.

A retired Phoenix cop turned PI, Shaw hopes JJ will be inclined to take her case. Despite his resentment for how their relationship ended, he agrees to help her track down leads on Danny. They chase the clues from Phoenix to Manhattan to upstate New York. In such close quarters Shaw finds it difficult to maintain a professional distance from her first real love. Then what happens if she finds Danny? Can she still love a man who abandoned her or is she too drawn to fixing her past mistake to let go of JJ again?

Blog Tour: Point of Departure by Dianne Kowal Kirtley (spotlight, guest post)

About the book – from Goodreads: It is 1841, and fourteen-year-old Charlotte Mailliard should be concerned with French fashion, French tradition and her studies with her classmates, Napoleon Bonaparte’s nephews. Instead, her Papa has decided to move his family to America. Now Charlotte can only think of a strange state called Illinois and the “savages” she will encounter on her long journey. No one could forsee that the family’s trek to that frontier would bring them to a Kentucky slave auction, an experience that would forever change their lives. Two decades earlier, another Frenchman, Henri Moreau, a street urchin of Paris, had made his way to that same Illinois, where life was a pleasant mix of his and native customs. But in 1832, that peace was destroyed by the Blackhawk War, an event that tragically impacted Henri and his family. As the nation and the Mailliard and Moreau families mature, it is the common theme of war that causes Charlotte to realize she is but one cog in the endless cycle of love and loss, the bane of a country where another Illinois native son will not abide “a house divided.”

Every Free Chance Book Reviews is pleased to welcome Dianne Kowal Kirley, author of Point of Departure, to the blog today. She has prepared the following guest post for all of you.

Who is Point of Departure’s Henry Moreau?

Who is Henry Moreau? It seems to be the first question that readers of my novel, Point of Departure, are asking. In a work that is awash with historical figures, the query has to some extent been surprising, and yet, perhaps it is not totally unexpected.  Henry is, after all, exceedingly handsome, trusting, intelligent and loyal. Wow!  All that and good looks.

Henry, though fictional, is a legitimate strain of American history.  As an example of the son of many French trappers who came to this country in the 18th and 19th centuries and lived among the natives, he is the half-breed race that was not quite welcomed by either society of his parentage. Swift Eagle among the natives, Henry among the settlers, he was suspected and thus cautious wherever he lived.  He is the example of that which is “other” and thus never one of the fold.

Henry is also the remedy for Charlotte Mailliard’s, the protagonist, innate fear of American savages.  Raised in the gentile society of Paris and Florence, she cannot but fear the talk she has heard of “savages,” a fear somewhat reinforced by her chance meeting with Annette Savage, Joseph Bonaparte’s discarded mistress during Charlotte’s first visit to Point Breeze, New Jersey, Joseph’s estate.

However, it is Charlotte’s cousin Antoine who opens her eyes to the possibility that “savages” might actually be more civilized than members of society when Antoine exposes Charlotte to Benjamin Franklin’s insightful essay, “Remarks Concerning the Savages.”  The irony that her true love arose from savage beginnings is not lost on Charlotte as she matures.

Henry is also the answer to my question of why Charlotte’s letter to her granddaughter omits any mention of her husband, a husband definitely held in high regard by his townsmen, but curiously absent in reference.  In the side margin of her favorite book, Maria Antoinette, Charlotte writes “To be one’s own companion, thus have I been.”  One must ask why within a family of many siblings and as a married woman, she would have written that note.  To me, it signified a longing, an alienation from her usual society—and her longing for that which could not be, Henry.  In the novel, the connection to Henry cannot be diminished for Charlotte despite the passage of time and the physical distance between them.  In early April, 1865, when Henry is wounded in war, Charlotte experiences his injury and is unconscious for a period of several days.

There is no question that Henry is also the classic example of the noble savage, the outsider, the one easily maligned, and yet the one that remains selfless and giving, over-looking the smallness of others.  His selfless act of supporting his adoptive parents, Mary and Owen, and the continued gifts to their world exemplify his true nobility.

Furthering that goodness, the third deceased in Whitman’s “A Sight in Camp,” may also be read as an allusion to Henry and thus he may be regarded as a Jesus figure. (page 324)

As the novel closes, Henry’s letter to Charlotte expresses his hope that, “the decency of this country will survive this test,” the test of course being the scar of Civil War.  He hopes that, “love and respect” will triumph over “fear and greed.”  Henry is the very best of all of us, that which we strive to be, and thus an also an Everyman with his trials and successes.

Ironically, Henry Moreau was originally Henry Tuissant, but as my story was in progress, I read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, whose main character is Henry Tuissant.  Thus Henry Tuissant became Henry Moreau, the first French name that came to mind.

Henry Moreau seems to have emerged as a memorable character, the one that evokes an emotional response.  What more could an author hope for?

About the book: Every thousand years the Vampire Queen selects a new body, always the fairest in the land, and this time she’s chosen Snow White.

Snow isn’t an ordinary girl. She doesn’t know that yet.

When Snow gets bitten by a Hunter, her life is thrown into a whirlwind of change where instead of worrying about what to eat, she has to fight not to drink the blood of fellow high school students. She becomes a revenant – not quite human, not quite vampire.

With the help of an eccentric old Professor, his seven adoptive sons, and her best friend, Snow learns to control her blood craving. Sort of.  She drinks a bloodlust tea, but she’d rather drink from her Hunter.

Or, a human.

She also discovers a whole other realm, one filled with fairies, dragons, and magic. And not only does the Vampire Queen want her, but there’s a pendant called the Seal of Gabriel created for Snow by the Vampire Queen’s twin sister. And Snow’s supposed to use it to restore balance to all magical creatures. Including vampires.

Please enjoy the following excerpt from

Blood and Snow.

“I’ve had several seriously sexual day dreams about the new guy. Have you seen him?”

“Cin, I didn’t need to know that.” I jammed my math book into my backpack, and slammed the locker door. Cindy rested her petite frame against the locker next to mine. Her radiant baby blues twinkled. “No, I haven’t seen him. Apparently he’s . . . cute?” I asked.

She snorted. “Cute? No! He isn’t a kitten. He’s hot, sexier than hell, and has a voice that could melt chocolate.”

I had to laugh. Cindy had a way with words. It’d been like that since first grade. We met our first day of school. She’d traded me her Twinkie for my apple with the line, “I don’t think you should eat the apple, Snow White.” We’d been friends almost ten years.

She was different than me in every way, except our blue eyes. She was the epitome of a waif, while I towered over her at five foot eight. She had blond hair that hung long, and was always perfectly styled, mine was a boring dark brown, and came to just below my ears. Her clothes were the latest fashion, as were her nails, makeup, and jewelry, including the heart shaped stud in her belly button. Me, well let’s just say I didn’t own any makeup, and my clothes consisted of baggy jeans, and large old t-shirts, thanks to my seven best friends, and their hand-me-downs. My nails were stubby, and my ears weren’t even pierced. Honestly, I wondered if Cin found me embarrassing sometimes, but I gave her points for sticking around.

“Melt chocolate, huh? He sounds nice.”

“Snow!” She stomped her foot. “Nice isn’t even a proper word. It’s in the same arena as fine, good, okay, and pure.” She shuddered.

“What’s wrong with pure?” I asked, unable to help a laugh, and started toward the gym.

She jogged next to me. “Nothing if you’re Snow White.”

My Writing Cave

By Victoria H. Smith

writing cave VHSSo most authors joke about having a writing cave. I actually didn’t have one until earlier this year. My husband built one for me in our apartment. I usually have a can of Sprite, my kitty cat on the windowsill, and stare at the screen until I need a break and go book boy hunting on Pinterest.

Before the “official” writing cave, though, I actually found myself at my second home. I’ll include a picture.

Yep. My second home is Barnes and Noble, and I usually sat in their café with a mocha latte in hand clicking away. This was where I wrote entire novels and learned many stories from fellow Barnes and Noble book browsers. This place is seriously like a bar. Everyone has a story, quite literally. 1. About the author: Victoria H. Smith has a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. She puts it to good use writing romance all day. She resides in the Midwest with her Macbook on her lap and a cornfield to her right. She often draws inspiration for her stories from her own life experiences, and the twenty-something characters she writes give her an earful about I also would get to chatting with them sometimes when whole tables weren’t free for me to work. They’d ask me about what I write and they’d tell me things about themselves. I got to meet many interesting people that way. Though, I have my official writing cave now I’ll never forget all those days and hours I spent at good ole’ BN!

In her free time, she enjoys extreme couponing, blogging, reading, and sending off a few tweets on Twitter when she can. She writes new adult fiction romance in the sub-genres of science fiction, urban fantasy, and contemporary, but really, anywhere her pen takes her, she goes.
