Why did I pick this book: I participated in the blog tour hosted by AToMR Tours. (I received a copy of this book for review purposes.)

Did I enjoy this book: I did enjoy this book. I thought it was a good story that was engaging and intense.

Back to You is told using both present day and flashbacks to when the two main characters were in high school. The flashbacks are emotionally charged. You really feel for these two teens and what they were going through. You can see how those events shaped them into the people they are now.

This book is also told from two alternating points of view – Lauren’s and Michael’s. We hear more from Lauren than we do from Michael. Lauren is a sweet girl and a true friend. She has relationship issues because of her best friend from high school. She measures everyone against him and hasn’t been able to move on from him completely. I had a tough time relating to her and feeling for her. She had found a great guy to date in Adam. She could have moved on but her troubles were self-inflicted. Lauren just wasn’t that sympathetic to me…even after hearing what had happened to her eight years earlier.

For me, I really felt for Michael. His past was so heartbreaking. I wanted him to be able to move past it more and to realize that none of it was his fault. None of it! He is a complex character. I wish the story was told from his point of view only. I wanted to hear more about how he became a single father, how he is so different from his parents and how he came to be that way. We get a glimpse of this but I think this story would have been much more powerful had we heard more, if not the whole story, from Michael.

Would I recommend it: I would recommend this book to those who enjoy contemporary romance books with a slight YA leaning.

Will I read it again: I will not.

About the book:
When Lauren Monroe first laid eyes on Michael Delaney back in high school, she had every reason to stay away from him; within minutes of their first encounter, his volatile actions confirmed his notorious reputation. But Lauren saw something in him that caused her to question his bad-boy persona, and against her better judgment, she took a chance. She had no way of knowing that the unlikely friendship they formed would become so important to her.

Or that it would end so painfully.

Eight years later, when Lauren begins her new job at Learn and Grow Day Care, Michael is the last person she expects to see. Refusing to revisit the hurt and confusion of their past, Lauren vows to keep her distance from him. But staying away from Michael proves to be more difficult than she thought, despite her lingering grief and her instincts for self-preservation.

As Lauren and Michael recall the friendship that changed them forever and the events that tore them apart, will they finally be able to heal? Or will the ghosts of Michael’s past prove to be too much to overcome?
