GIVEAWAY!! Spotlight: Defining Moments by Faye Hicks with an interview

Defining Moments
written by Faye Hicks
published by Faye Hicks

find it here: Barnes & Noble, Amazon, iBooksGoodreads

About the book – from Goodreads: Scientist Ellie Ward has discovered a portal to the past. In fact, she discovered it at her childhood home when she was nine and she’s been using it to extract herself from bad situations ever since. Each time it’s returned her to the ‘defining moment’ in her past – the point in time where a bad decision set her on the path to tragedy. The problem is, Ellie never knows what her defining moments were and so she never has any idea how much of her life she’s going to have to repeat to avoid her latest ordeal. When Ellie’s research takes her to a remote area of northern Canada, she faces yet another crisis when her small plane crashes in the bush. Seriously injured and stranded more than 2000 miles from her window to the past, this time Ellie has no way to rewind the clock.

Every Free Chance Book Reviews is pleased to welcome Faye Hicks, author of Defining Moments, to the blog today. She has answered the following questions for all of you.

Where did you get your inspiration for Defining Moments?

I’ve always been intrigued at how seemingly innocuous decisions can end up changing a person’s entire life and I’ve often wondered what my own life might be like now, if I’d made different choices at my own ‘defining moments’.  Also, I enjoy books that include just a tiny hint of the paranormal – especially time-travel – so I thought it might be fun to write a story that combined these two ideas.

Did you have to do a lot of research for Defining Moments?

Not really – I grew up in the Maritimes (in eastern Canada) and I’ve since spent a lot of time working in northern Canada, so all of the settings in the book were quite familiar to me.  Much of the background info I needed to write the story came from my own experiences at work or at play, and the rest just came from my imagination.  That’s the great thing about writing fiction – you just make it up!

Please tell us, in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

If you like adventure, time-travel, romance, tragedy, and humor then Defining Moments will give you hours of riveting entertainment!

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?

I’ve just finished a couple of short story collections.  One is called ‘Who Says You Can’t Herd Cats? – it’s about the many quirky and comical cats that my husband and I have rescued over the past few decades.  The second, called ‘A Day in the Life of a Professor, is about some of my strange and comical experiences as an engineering professor. I’m currently working on my second novel; it’s a thriller about a woman who disappears for several months and the emotional crisis her husband and daughters experience as a result.

I see in your biography that you are a professor of engineering. What made you want to write fiction?

I’ve actually wanted to be a writer since I was a teen. Story ideas are constantly popping into my mind – especially in my dreams – and I’ve got scraps of paper stuffed in drawers and cupboards all over the house with these ‘idea seeds’ jotted down on them. About five years ago, I finally decided it was time to see if I could turn some of those ideas into a novel and so Defining Moments was born!

What do you enjoy most about writing? About teaching?

The thing I love most about creative writing is having the opportunity to entertain people – it’s a huge thrill when someone tells me that one of my stories made them laugh or that it evoked a strong emotional response.

For me, the best part about teaching is getting to spend time with young people. My students are so bright and enthusiastic – that makes it a lot of fun.

What is your favorite genre to read?

I enjoy all types of fiction but I especially like reading British mysteries, scientific thrillers, and science fiction.

Who is your favorite author?

I have so many, it’s hard to choose just one. In the mystery genre, I like PD James, Reginald Hill, Peter Robinson, Deborah Crombie, and Elizabeth George. For sci-fi, I especially enjoy Robert A. Heinlein, Arthur C. Clark, and Robert J. Sawyer. I’m also a huge fan of both Stephen King and James Herriot.

In your opinion, what is one book that everyone should read?

Oh wow – can I say Defining Moments?   I definitely think that everyone should read that one!  😉

Tell us three things about yourself that cannot be found on the internet…at least not found easily.

It’s actually kind of scary that I am having a hard time thinking of three things that aren’t already ‘out there’, but here goes:

             1.    My favorite book is Stephen King’s, The Stand; I’ve read it at least 20 times.

             2.    My favorite movie is When Harry Met Sally; I’ve watched it about a million

             3.    I have an adorable little 3-legged dog named “Piglet” – I’ll be writing about her
in a future short story collection.

Thanks for the opportunity to visit your blog today!

About the author: Faye is a Canadian writer who moonlights as an engineering professor.  She grew up in eastern Canada (New Brunswick), then moved out west to Alberta in the early 1980s.  She lives on an acreage (the ‘Cat Ranch’) near Edmonton, Alberta with her husband, Les, and their furry family of rescued cats and dogs.  Faye enjoys writing both fiction and creative non-fiction.  In addition to her first novel, Defining MomentsFaye’s other two books, Who Says you Can’t Herd Cats? and A Day in the Life of a Professor are available as eBooks and in paperback.  Faye is currently working on her second novel.

Zeus and the Thunderbolt of Doom (Book 1)

After pulling a magical thunderbolt from a stone, ten-year-old Zeus goes on the adventure of a lifetime in this thrilling start to a brand-new series! The terrible Titans–merciless giants who enjoy snacking on humans–have dominated the earth and put the world into chaos. But their rule is about to be put to the test as a group of young Olympians discover their powers and prepare to righteously rule the universe….
Ten-year-old Zeus is mystified (and super-annoyed) by the fact that he keeps getting hit by lightening. Every. Single. Year. He also longs for adventure, as he has never been far from the cave where he grew up.

Zeus gets his wish–and a lot more than he bargained for–when he is kidnapped by dangerous, giant Titans! In self-defense, he grabs the first thing he sees–an actual thunderbolt he pulls from a stone that is covered in mysterious markings. Zeus is the only one who can decipher the markings, and sets off on a quest to rescue his youthful fellow Olympians from the evil Cronus. Armed with his trusty thunderbolt (named Bolt, of course), Zeus is on an adventure of a lifetime–and a journey to fulfill his destiny as King of the Gods.

Hades and the Helm of Darkness (Book 3 coming April 2013)

The Heroes in Training are entering the Underworld—if Hades can conquer his canine fears, that is.

The Underworld usually isn’t really meant to be a fun place—but tell that to Hades! He loves the dark and the stinky smell of sulfur. However, there is one thing that Hades is not a fan of: dogs. And when Zeus and his fellow Olympians encounter Cerberus—a snarling, three-headed dog—Hades must conquer his fears and tame the hound so everyone can continue into the Underworld and deposit their Titan prisoner, Oceanus, back where he belongs!

But with magical water that causes forgetfulness, hot beds of lava, and another epic battle with two more Titans standing in their way, will Zeus and his heroes make it out of the Underworld with everyone intact?

About the author, Joan Holub: I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children’s books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job.

I illustrated my first published children’s book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts — Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee!

Now I write full time and have written and/or illustrated over 130 children’s books. Creating books that entertain, inform, and interest children (and me) is a fabulous job that I truly love.

Every Free Chance Book Reviews is pleased to welcome Vanessa Morgan, author of GPS with Benefits, to the blog today. She has prepared the following guest post for all of you.

Thank you for having me on your blog today. I’m truly honored to be here!

How many people do you know that make jokes about their GPS device or even talk to it?   Nearly everyone, right?

Also, GPS devices already know where you are and how fast you are driving. Who says that, in the near future, they won’t be able to know what you look at and what you say.

These thoughts form the basis of my new release, GPS with Benefits, in which a womanizer purchases a new GPS device, not knowing that it has a mind of ‘her’ own.

The inspiration for GPS with Benefits came to me when I was in the car with a friend. We made jokes about the GPS device and imagined how it would be if the GPS was actually alive. I immediately knew that these ideas could be turned into a hilarious story.

I won’t reveal more, but GPS with Benefits has some twists and turns that you won’t see coming and that will have you laughing out loud.

Your turn… What’s the weirdest/funniest thing that ever happened to you on the road?

By the way, if you leave a comment on this post, you’ll automatically be entered to win an Amazon Gift Card of $25.

Happy reading wherever you are and whenever you get a free chance!!!

Review: The Red Serpent Trilogy by Rishabh Jain

red serpent coverrstThe Red Serpent Trilogy
written by Rishabh Jain
published by AJ International Press

find it here: (affiliate links) Barnes & NobleAmazonGoodreads

Why did I pick this book: I had participated in the blog tour for this book back in September. (I received a copy of this book for review purposes.

Did I enjoy this book: No, I did not. It was bad. And I don’t say that lightly. However, this book was just so bad.

My biggest issue was the lack of development throughout the book. Everything just happened as it should…there was no conflict, no apparent thought process, no drawing out of decisions so that reader will get engrossed and engaged in what is happening to the characters. For example, when the vampire kidnaps Alex and Alex asks him to switch his allegiance, the vampire does it. No questions asked, no conflicting thoughts, no anguish or contemplation…nothing. He says sure, why not. (Those are my words based on what I read…not a direct quote.)

The dialogue does not flow at all. The author uses swear words to try to make the characters seem tough but this fails miserably. Sometimes the vampires speak very properly while at other times very lax…sometimes this occurs in the same conversation. Other examples of bad dialogue: “It will pain only for about five seconds.” Pain? Shouldn’t it be hurt? “Then you would slowly, slowly drift.” Now, this one doesn’t sound wrong here but in context the character is speaking in the present and should have said “the you will slowly, slowly drift.” For the most part, the dialogue and situations that the characters find themselves in are unbelievable and unrealistic. My favorite bad line in this book is: “And like the great Latin words say, ‘In order to have peace, there must be war.” Really?? Are all Latin words great or just these ones? And what makes them great? The order in which they are said? I think the author meant to reference a historical figure, but did not. This just had me shaking my head in wonderment and confusion.

There is no real continuity with the dialogue or with the characters’ names. The uncle is referred to as Uncle John, John, Howe, and General Howe. The vampire uncle is called Gareny, Uncle Gareny, and Nick. Alex – the main character – is called Alex, Alexander, and the Falsifier (which I have yet to figure out). I can understand different names for each character but there was no rhyme or reason to when or how the author used these names. Sometimes all of the names were used in the same paragraph. It made it difficult for me to follow along.

Honestly, it pained me to finish this book. I kept hoping it would redeem itself in the end. SPOILER ALERT — It does not redeem itself. Books like this make me wish that I could be a person that could abandon a book mid-read. Generally, I’m not one of those people.

Would I recommend it: No, I would not.

Will I read it again: No.

About the book – from the publisher: The Red Serpent Trilogy presents a highly evolved vampire to fear: cold and callous, powerful and dangerous, possessed by mystic promises and destroyed only by silver. It is the year 2021 — the human world has degraded, its inhabitants unworthy of the supernatural gifts bestowed upon them. Compelled by ancient prophesy, an ancient vampire army takes the human race by force, sparing few lives. They await the second coming of their king, Anaxagoras, which will hurl the world into a final battle that will free the vampires from their infinite hiding. But by the hands of fate, there is one human who may save his entire race.

The Red Serpent Trilogy is a celestial fusion of science fiction and fantasy, unfolding conflicting intentions for the survival of both the human and vampire races. But in a world ruled by supernatural and mythological forces, there is only room for one race, and neither will go easily. The few survivors of the fatal vampire onslaught escape to an asteroid space station, Regnum, where they thrive as they keep an attentive watch on the vampires on the earth below. But unbeknown to himself or anyone else, Alex, half human half vampire, holds the keys to secrets that will help him realize his duties and cement his fate as either a human or a vampire.

Saving Time

Two years ago Garison Fitch traveled through time and rewrote history. An accident in the eighteenth century created a whole new world, and even gave Garison a wife he had never met before. Now, he’s got a daughter and he’s coming to enjoy this world he created. Until he’s attacked by men masquerading as Indians, and a funeral procession from out of the past enlists his help, and a tree grows from sappling to full-grown in a matter of minutes, threatening his daughter’s very life. Time itself is unraveling and Garison’s trips through time seem to be the cause. Garison must go back in time once again and keep himself from making the original trip that started the problem. But he can’t use his time machine to go back. How does one sew up a rip in time?

Lost Time

Jason Kerrigan and Brownwyn Dalmouth are pilots with the Republic of Texas Army Air Corps. A world war is going on and bombs have just brought an end to Crockett Air Field in south Texas. Jason and Bronwyn, though, are called away from the battle to be test pilots for a new aircraft that-they’re told-will bring the war to an end. The experimental craft lives up to expectations in early tests, but then it lands them somewhere it never should have sent them. Another place? Another time? Another dimension? Somehow, they’ve taken a trip to the future and changed the past. Or did they? The answer to their change of reality may be known to a Justice of the Peace in Colorado named Garison Fitch. To figure it out, though, Garison may have to team up with his least favorite person: Bat Garrett.

Please enjoy this excerpt from Crossroads.

He held me gently with both of his arms and wings this time.  All I needed was his touch, for him to hold me that way; it made all the difference in the world.  I was safe again.  Without thought, I turned toward him.  The look in his eyes was so tempting, telling me that he wanted me too.  I knew it was impossible for him to want and need me the same way, but his eyes told me something else. The depth of my yearning and what I wanted to do at this very moment was undeniable.

I leaned toward him and tenderly placed a kiss on his supple lips to thank him.  It was an innocent kiss.  What was the harm in just one small kiss?  I was extremely surprised that he didn’t push me away.  I was even more surprised at myself.  I was never the type to make the first move.

“Thank you for saving me,” I whispered, looking straight into his soulful eyes, as something came over me.  Uncontrollable heat ran through my body.  He was right.  It was dangerous, but it was me who couldn’t control myself.  His eyes gave me permission to continue, so I gave him another kiss, but slower and longer this time.  He kissed me back, but with much hesitation.  His lips were warm and sweet like honeysuckle, just how I imagined they would be.  The warmth spread all over my body like a blazing fire.
Still holding me, he pulled me away with a sudden jerk, his eyes piercing into mine with anger.  His left hand was tightly wrung around my hair and the other gripping my shirt so I could feel the tightness from it.  Panting, wanting more of him, I forgot how to breathe, and so did he.  His eyes, still fierce with anger, gripped me even tighter as he slightly pushed and pulled me, fighting and uncertain of what he wanted to do.  Feeling petrified, I had to prepare myself for the consequence of my actions, for I knew I had crossed the line.
